We all know that - mascaras by 3 months, cream products by a year and powders, three. But do we actually "abide" by that rule?

Personally I do stick to their use-by date (for skin care items and food anyway. My husband can testify to my constant nagging of him consuming expired bread and milk!! Eww! >.<). For items with the "good for after opened" icon, I'll try to use it up within that timeframe, but am I little lenient - one or two months after that is ok I guess.
I'm terrible with makeup though!! My trusty 6 year old Maybelline brow pencil (that has been discontinued for eons already) is still going strong although the cap has yellowed significantly! =X I usually trust my eyes and nose - if it has changed color / texture and has a funny smell to it, then it's time to officially toss it into the bin, otherwise it's still good to go - so far, so good! Yes, I'm horribly biased like that so sue me! :P
How about you? Do you discard your beauty items once time's up, or like me, do you hold on to some of them for *just* a little longer! lol! Answer away! :D
i usually dont go by dates for makeup products. i mean who can use it all up unless that was one product they use daily? o.O mascara i usually toss by 3 months but the rest of it i usally go by color/smell also
ReplyDeleteI usually go by colour or smell too but I do go through my stuff every few months to see what's nearing expiry or already expired. I'm glad many manufacturer have started to print dates onto their packaging.
ReplyDeleteI only toss mascara really...usually after 4 or 6 months, depending if it smells or looks different, etc. The same for liquid stuff. For powders, i never tossed any away :S
ReplyDeleteIsabella: yes! For powders, even if you use it daily, it would take months before it hits the pan!
ReplyDeletelyn: me too! Its nice to see manufacturers paying more attention to this! :D
ReplyDeleteJasmim: hehehe me too! I never throw any powders out! :P
ReplyDeleteHi Jenn! I have no problems with skincare, which is usually finished before the expiry date. ( Besides, it's too expensive to bin it ). However, it is totally the opposite for cosmetics. Mine last for years! I will only toss if there's a change in color and smell.
ReplyDeletei usually toss stuff every now and then, especially skincare items.
ReplyDeletefor makeup stuff, like you i trust my nose and eyes. if it smells funny or look funny, THROW!
i usually stick to adhering with expiration dates. don't want to end up battling with skin boo boos just because i refused to let it go! besides, new makeup is much more fun! (^_^)
ReplyDeletei would never trash them. normally, i never bother with expiry date on beauty products. i always stick on one moisturiser until i finish it. but on make up, my only concern is lipstick. i can never finish 1 in a year! but i still wont toss them, just stop using it :)
ReplyDeletecarol
I usually adhere to the expiration dates. It's only powder products that I keep for longer.
ReplyDeleteonly if it's food then i will adhere. but for some skincare like only good for 6 months after opening, i will use it till it's empty or turns bad :P 6 months is just too short
ReplyDeleteI do! even if it smells and look ok, I do throw them away :)
ReplyDelete1-2 months after expiry is usually fine with me, but I also go by colour and smell. Some of the dates are just too short! (Especially if it's organic/natural) And considering I store them away from sunlight :P
ReplyDeleteHowever, if the item is LE, I will keep it, but if it's really gone bad I will wash it and keep the box/container haha :D
Food-wise... nuh uh, not taking any chances there haha!
I love to keep things. It runs in the family; all of us just love to keep things for 'memories', or 'just in case'. I still have my HG Anna Sui mascara that has expired since like, 9 months ago, but I still like to see it in my makeup drawer, just lying there being pretty. =)
ReplyDeleteAlexandra: ditto!! :D I can't bear to throw anything away, especially my makeup!
ReplyDeleteplue: I rarely throw stuff out... even if they've gone rancid! :P
ReplyDeleteI just hide all of them in a cupboard... out of sight, out of mind. Until my husband complains, that is! :P
MereMakeupManiac: Good girl!! Yes, its always better to be safe than sorry!
ReplyDeleteCarol: yeah same here! I'll stop using them, but still keep them, especially those with pretty packaging!! :D
ReplyDeletegio: thats good! :D
ReplyDeletexin: yeah! my 15ml stuff lasts me for over a year, so 6 months is definitely too short!
ReplyDeleteNikki: you're so good! Hehehe!! :D
ReplyDeleteStephanie: Ahaha you and I both!! I'm not taking any chances with food too! :P
ReplyDeleteBun Bun: me too!! I still have my first MAC lipglass with me - the 2N. It's super rancid by now, but i'm still keeping it for keepsake! :P
ReplyDeletefor cosmetics especially lipsticks, eyeshadows etc, usually I don't really pay attention to the expire date >.<. By the way I'm new follower, so happy to find your blog :)
